Monkey Trial Project, Fall 2008 - Overview
An overview of the Monkey Trial Project. Narrated
by Stephen Federico and Rebecca Pollack.


During this project, students used the structure of a school board meeting
to argue whether intelligent design should be part of the Napa Schools curriculum. Working in groups, students assumed the roles of attorneys,, witnesses, and experts and argued their cases before a judge and audience.

This project demonstrates the skills of collaboration,
critical thinking, and leadership. Teachers Stephen Federico and Rebecca Pollack identify the key steps required to complete the project including working collaboratively with team members, constructing arguments to defend difficult positions, and a final presentation to an audience.

California Propositions Public Service Announcements
Fall 2008 - Overview
An overview of the PSA project. Commentary by
teacher Justin Wells.


In this project students explored the role of media in shaping public opinion. The project took place during the 2008 Fall elections; students produced public service announcements about the California propositions that were on the ballot. The final PSAs were shown to an audience of registered voters whom they wanted to persuade.

Student performance is measured against a wide range of criteria - how well they collaborated, did they complete assignments, did they display leadership skills - in order to more full assess their perforrmance during a project.

Making Learning Relevant - The Hydrology Project
Veteren teacherFrank Draper makes learning relevant by putting
science in the context of the geography of Arizona.
Students work in groups at various workstations and in the field to explore changes to the environment
they live in. Unit-long projects include in class work, several field trips, and an analysis of the environment in which they live and that directly affects their lives.
